Jan 30-Feb 2, 2023 Across the flats to Hoffman's Cay

After a couple of good days at Cistern Cay it was time to move to even better.  These Berrys Islands are full of great anchorages and we have places we have been looking forward to ever since our last visit two years ago. 

We are ready to go early in the morning, but hold our departure to 11:00.  We want the sun overhead and the tide on the rise as we attempt the shallow water route over to Hoffman’s Cay.  There is a deep water route, but we are going for the shallow water route as it is a unique experience to cross the very shallow bank by threading through a just slightly deeper series of channels.



Lois takes lookout on the bow and there is continuous discussion as she reads the water for the subtle differences that indicate slightly deeper water. Brent at the helm is watching the depth sounder and chart closely.  The chart provide some help but it must be remembered that the sands shift over time.  The dagger boards are set at “curb feeler” depth, which is just slightly deeper than the rudders. The idea is to bump the dagger boards on the bottom before damaging the rudders. 

In the thinnest places we slow the boat way down recognizing that the bottom is close.  On either side of us the water is only a foot deep. We are looking for at least 30” for the rudders. Shifting the boat 10 feet port or starboard often finds another 6” of water. The water is crystal clear and details in the bottom are easy to see.  We end up getting through without ever touching bottom. 

When we arrive at Hoffman’s Cay our favorite anchorage is waiting.  We nestle the anchor into the sand and transition into a feeling of having arrived at our destination.  We may stay here a while.  

Brent strung the hammock up for some intense relaxation. Look at the color of that water!

It was soon after this that Lois realized she should have applied sunscreen more often while standing on the bow all day. Ouch.

Jan 31st....it has been one month since we left our Virginia home. We had pineapple upside down cake to celebrate.

The last few days have been spent lazily enjoying the pristine crescent shaped beach, crystal clear blue water and the occasional sea turtle's visit.  There is good snorkelling on eirher end of the cove- Lois was very excited to spot a large Common Atlantic Octopus on one outing- another box checked on her Lifetime Critters list.  Sam makes sure we visit the beach at least 3 times a day via dinghy or paddleboard.  

We'll wait out some stronger winds on Friday then move south again for more adventure.

April 2-4, 2023 Myrtle Beach to Cape Lookout

 We slipped away from our place on the dock after three nights at Myrtle Beach Yacht Club and turned into the ICW heading north. An hour later we turned into Little River Inlet to pass into the open Atlantic Ocean.   We sailed north about 30 miles before returning to the ICW via Cape Fear River.  The Cape Fear River was in flood tide, which was very helpful making 15 miles north to Carolina Beach.  We took a mooring provided by the city of Carolina Beach after talking on the phone with Larry the Dockmaster who is just about the friendliest guy you ever met. He was very welcoming.  Sam was anxious for some shore time, so we dinghy-ed to the town dock and walked 1 block to the ocean beach. She seemed happy to ve back near the surf. On our last visit Larry told us the best burger in town could be found at the gas station next to the dinghy dock. We enjoyed it last time & it seemed like a good way to shortcut dinner while also filling our fuel jugs. ...

Fri Sept 11 Patuxtent River to Little Choptank

We woke up to a ruckus.  These two were being quite chatty and apparently we were anchored near their tree.  They would jabber to each other, fly off to do some fishing, then come back to the tree to brag about their catch and, undoubtedly, the one that got away. We had some nice sailing leaving the Patuxent River, light rain with the sun peaking through now & then.  The skies began to darken and the wind picked up about 3 hours into the sail.  We ended up skating though 4-6 foot seas with 17-20 kt windsfor the rest of the day.  Lots of waves over the bow, a few crashing up over the cockpit windows.  We received a text message from friends Ed & Lynn that they were anchored in the Little Choptank River.  We were not far (as the crow flies) from there, and decided to join them. Day 22 & 23 Glouster, Mass- A Brief Intermission....

When we arrived in Gloucester, MA Sunday afternoon it was incredibly hot, part of a heat wave involving most of the nation.  We turned on air conditioning; it was lovely. Monday we had planned to relax and not move the boat, waiting for more favorable winds to allow us to move north.  That turned out to be a good call, because I was feeling under the weather and slept most of the day.  Brent made me some pizza for dinner and we played a couple rounds of cribbage. (He won as usual.)  Sometime in the evening it started to rain, and continued to pour down all night. We needed to pull out a quilt to sleep under. Tuesday morning the rain had washed the boat thoroughly, and instead of being unbearably hot we were digging into our cooler weather clothes for sweaters and wool socks. What a change!
