Day 62- Home Port

Aug 31
Southward again! Since it's Labor Day weekend there are a bazillion fishing boats at the river inlets. So far everyone is behaving themselves and being courteous mariners.

There's nothing like 92 degrees on the Chesapeake with little or no wind to make a person think back fondly on the days in Maine when we needed wool socks and an extra layer of blankets. This is the weather that prompted us to schedule this trip for over the summer months.  Yet even while I sit here sweating, its hard to complain because we've had marvelous temperatures the whole way, and little rain.

Hurricane Dorian is looming in the Carribean, threatening Florida, Georgia & the Carolinas, so there will undoubtedly be some effect at home. Right now the forecast is high winds & rain on Thursday, six days from now, so our going-home timing is perfect.

1:30 pm    We're so close to home that it's hard to be patient! We can see Windmill Point- that's our exit off Chesapeake Bay, but it's 15 miles away. After that west into the Rappahannock River and north up the Corrotoman to home-  another 15 or so miles

6:00pm  We're motoring on our own Corrotoman River, almost home! Our friends/neighbors Bill & Jane met us in their boat halfway up the river- what a treat to see familiar faces! We pulled in to our dock at 6:38pm, and we saw neighbors Terri & Kenny on their dock. Several other people texted us welcome home messages... the wonderful part of living in a small town! ❤

It didn't take long to settle Second Star into her very own slip, and I'm sure she breathed a satisfied sigh to be back.  Brent brought the truck down to the dock, and we loaded as much gear into it as we could before our energy gave out, the sun went down, or the mosquitos carried us off.

Back at the house everything got piled onto the floor- we'll put away tomorrow, and priority one was giving Shelby a much needed bath. Then came the dreamed of long showers with unlimited hot water and a deep sleep unaccompanied by the sploshing of waves and the clanking of rigging.

After two months at sea there's quite a bit of adjustment required to get back to land life. When we close our eyes it feels like the room is rocking on the water. The first time I stood in front of the stove I hesitated, trying to find the igniter button. I couldn't remember where the cutting boards were kept.  There's a thousand things to clean up, sanitize and put away.
It's nice to be home.

It was a marvelous trip!
